EV Sales in Canada Hit 14.6% in 2024: Quebec Leads, Ontario Sees Growth
Toronto, ON – Carrookie Newsroom
EV Market Share Reaches Record High
Canada’s zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) adoption hit new levels in 2024, with Statistics Canada (StatsCan) reporting that 14.6% of all new vehicle registrations were ZEVs—up from 11% in 2023. In Q4 2024, the number climbed even higher to 18.3%, highlighting growing consumer demand for sustainable mobility.
Battery-Electric and Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles Drive Growth
Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) dominated the market, accounting for 83.6% of all ZEV registrations, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) made up the rest. This reflects a strong push toward full electrification alongside transitional hybrid options.
SUVs and Crossovers Dominate EV Preferences
Multi-purpose vehicles, such as electric SUVs and crossovers, were Canada’s top ZEV category in 2024, with 65,656 units registered. These models offer a balance of space, performance, and eco-conscious driving.
Quebec Leads in ZEV Adoption, Ontario Follows
Quebec closed out 2024 with an impressive 30.9% ZEV adoption rate, fueled by strong EV rebates. However, after suspending its rebate program in early 2025 due to depleted funds, the province saw an estimated 65% drop in EV sales, according to S&P Global.
Ontario, where Carrookie is proudly based, followed with 56,600 ZEVs registered, translating to an 8.1% EV market share. As EV adoption rises in the province, Toronto car dealerships like Carrookie play a key role in helping buyers transition to electric vehicles.
